EP86: Crocs. Veldskoens. And Guavas. Lundi Khoisan - How to become an overnight success in only 10 Years

As part of our ongoing focus on young South Africans with a voice and something important to say, this week on the #DocAndGuru podcast we chat with MixFM Radio Presenter and Kyknet TV personality Lundi Khoisan.

Coming all the way from the bright lights of Wellington to the loadshedding of Gauteng, Lundi is as earthy as a Boland bredie and proud of it; although even we couldn’t coax a trademark “Lekker” out of her on this show.

And there’s no better example of what it takes to “become an overnight success in 10 years” because our guest today holds a BDram. Hons degree from the University of Stellenbosch and qualifications from the Wits Radio Academy (cum laude) the AAA School of Advertising. Lundi has worked her way up pretty much every rung on the radio broadcast ladder and is setting a great example to all young South Africans, on putting back what you take out, by lecturing to drama students at the University of Pretoria.

So if you’re young and looking for some tips on getting into #media then join us this week as one of Mzansi’s rising stars talks about her journey. And you can find out whether Lundi will be will be wearing Crocs or Veldskoens to the Olympics in Japan this week.

And as a special listening bonus, this week on The Doc and The Guru Podcast we also hand out our very first industry award. Listen in #free and find out who is the first recipient of the not so highly prized Doc and Guru Guava Award. #GuavaAward

EP85: Building Bridges with Brad Habana

As South Africa starts rebuilding after a horrific last week, we chat with Brad Habana on a host of topics, including understanding, mutual respect, embracing cultures and building bridges. So don’t miss another insightful episode of The DOC & The GURU Podcast this week as we welcome Brad from Qatar, where he is working with the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy on next year’s exciting FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Not only does Brad share his lessons and wisdom as a senior and very experienced sports marketer (and there are many valuable stories and nuggets there), but he also wears his hat as a one of Brand South Africa’s Global Ambassadors, and chats about how he is building bridges between SA and Qatar.

Again, it’s a not-to-be-missed episode, where you will hear first-hand about the innovative plans for both the world-class soccer tournament as well as legacy projects (like exporting stadiums to poorer countries after the final whistle) from the first World Cup to be held in the Middle East.

EP83: Greg Baillie – Nick Kyrgios and the Tik Tok Onion Principle

Known as Douyin in its native China, Tik Tok is redefining the concept of short-form video for brands around the world through an AI-powered, feed-style interface which allows users to create and share vertical video clips lasting up to 15-seconds, and consume & comment on UGC.

This week on The Doc and Guru The Podcast we chat with Greg Baillie @Webfluential Head of Growth (HOG) about how Tik Tok is making waves in the local market.

Since being launched by ByteDance in 2016 Tik Tok has been downloaded more than one billion times globally and Tik Tok’s mounting influence in youth culture is challenging every traditional digital media platform offering.

Of course the moment we start juxtaposing Tik Tok against traditional digital media platforms that in itself is a powerful media statement.
Traditional digital media. How’s that for premature digital ageing!
But engaging with Tik Tok is a little bit like watching Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon. Deep down inside you know he’s simply outrageous. And so infuriating. But so entertaining and compelling that you just can’t stop watching him.

So is Tik Tok just a big audience generator or do its ad-formats like brand takeover and in-feed native video allow for a deeper, more integrated creative interface?

Listen in and subscribe free to The Doc and The Guru Podcast as Greg Baillie talks about the importance of early creative engagement and matching brand to content. About an inside the creative content-onion magnetism rather than the traditional through the creative content-onion push for attention.

When it comes to #media Greg Baillie might be the HOG but is Tik Tok the GOAT?

EP82: The Doc and Guru meet The Brandfather – Ranking the Top 50 Brands in South Africa

This week on The Doc and Guru podcast we chat with Brand Finance Africa CEO Jeremy Sampson about the recent release of the Brand Finance Africa report on South Africa’s Top 50 Most Valuable Brands.

Every year, Brand Finance puts 5,000 of the biggest brands around the world to the test, evaluating their strength, quantifying their value, and ranking those brands across all sectors and countries globally. South Africa’s top 50 most valuable and strongest brands are included in the Brand Finance South Africa 50 2021 Report.

The Brand Finance Top50 Report showcases the resolve & resilience of local brands during the pandemic with Total Brand Value standing at over R460 Billion.

The report has some familiar insights.

The Top 3 sectors banking (23%), telecoms (18%) and retail (13%) still dominate, accounting for over 50% (R247 Billon) of total brand value. But it’s the performance of new entries such as Dischem, Media24 and Sibanye Stillwater that catch the eye. And when it comes to the retail clothing sector find out who is the biggest winner and who is the biggest loser (or is that victim?) during the Covid18 pandemic.

But it’s not all about financial value.

In this podcast Jeremy “The Brandfather” Sampson talks with The Doc and The Guru about the importance of reputation management to overall brand health. MTN may be Mzansi’s most valuable brand for the 10th consecutive year but find out why brands like Capitec and Carling Black Label feature amongst the nation’s Top 5 Strongest Brands, as we unpack the contribution of ethical practice and customer-centric innovation on overall brand health.

EP81: Sport Is A Big Business - Mnqobi Zondi

On this week’s episode of The DOC & The GURU Podcast, we chat about marketing and the commercial aspects of sport as a big business with Mnqobi Zondi, a Senior Administrator at one of South Africa’s major sporting codes. This episode was recorded before the BIG action of this week where the Proteas (did you notice without a sponsor) were on fire by beating the Windies 2-0 in the Test Series, the Bulls crashing out of the Rainbow Cup Final in Italy and of course the biggest commercial news being the sponsorship fiasco at the Euros where tournament sponsors, Coca-Cola and Heineken, were snubbed by some high-profile players.

EP80: Shift from Strive to Thrive on The Doc & Guru Podcast - Gary Graham

On this week’s episode, we chat to Gary Graham, the Chief Reinvention Officer at 3i’s Group and Co-founder of the Center4Reinvention on all things reinvention and learning to thrive in disruption. Inspired by the work of Dr. Nadya Zhexembayeva and the global Reinvention Society, Gary demystifies ‘the hype around reinvention’ as he aims to amplify the reach, impact and influence of the reinvention mindset, tools and movement.

Again, we pack it in as we discuss; apprehension and anxiety around change, life and energy in systems, simultaneous careers and the changing nature of work, what do you stand for and purpose matters, and how do you reinvent SA.

If 2020 taught us anything, then it’s that we are in desperate need of reinvention across many spheres – individual, organisational, community and society. So again, don’t miss out on this fascinating talk by downloading or subscribing to The DOC & The GURU for free and move from surviving to thriving amidst a world of chaos and disruption.

EP78: Business Reputation Management - Mind the Gap (Nqobile Alick Mahlangu)

We may debate whether it was Peter Drucker who first made the statement “if you can’t measure it you can’t manage it” but there’s no debating the fact that, when it comes to marketing and advertising, measurement of business and brand reputation is integral to campaign management.

This week on The Doc and The Guru Podcast we chat with Media and Data Analyst Nqobile Alick Mahlangu from media monitoring agency Ornico about tracking business reputation in the media, and the importance of building trust in the marketplace.

What are the critical tools needed to measure reputation? Is it necessary to have an external party conduct primary research and data analyses, or does the collective weight of secondary data paint enough of a picture? And who does the listening? Real people or AI Bots?

In her recently published book Mission Economy: A Moonshot Guide to Changing Capitalism leading global economist Mariana Mazzucato advocates a shift from shareholder to stakeholder engagement. She asserts that for companies to maintain their reputations and build trust they need to do things 4 things
• See things differently.
• Do things differently.
• Collaborate differently.
• Redistribute profits differently.

Is this really news or do we just have to Mind the Gap?

Just manage the Reputation Reality Gap between assessed perception and the UX reality. The Trust Gap between the Informed Public and the Mass Population?

It might come as no surprise to discover that in the 2021 Edelman Trust Barometer South Africa has the worst Trust Gap in the world.

Tune and listen free to The Doc and The Guru podcast this week and find out which country has a Trust Gap score that’s even worse than South Africa.

That little piece of trivia might just turn your perception upside down.
