Don’t Forget What Bayern Did To Atletico The First Time

Bayern Munich head into their UEFA Champions League fixture against Atletico Madrid riding high, having remained unbeaten in just over three months in all competitions. The defending champions also have 15 goals in four UCL group stage victories, and will look to add insult to injury against an Atletico side who suffered their joint-worst defeat in the competition against them when they were handed a 4-0 thrashing at the Allianz Arena. Bayern have already secured top spot in Group A, so many could argue that the Spanish side have more to play for, especially on home turf. However, Bayern have been known to be ruthless in this competition.

In the latest episode of the SL Podcast’s ‘The Bundesliga Connection’, DW Sports Correspondent Kres Harrington provides a UCL preview for the German sides in the competition, reminding listeners “Don’t forget what Bayern did to Atletico the first time” in reference to their first tie. He also breaks down why viewers should pay attention to Borussia Dortmund’s tie against Lazio, as BVB aim to bounce back from their loss to FC Koln in the Bundesliga, which led Harrington to label them “serial disappointers”.

Is Sancho Collecting Dust At Dortmund?

Borussia Dortmund have made a solid start to the 2020/21 campaign, playing some of the most exciting football in both the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League (UCL). Despite this, questions have been asked of highly-rated star Jadon Sancho after his recent transfer saga which saw him linked with a £108million move to Manchester United. Despite his recent slump, it could be argued that Dortmund are doing just fine thanks to the rest of their young talent. Domestically, BVB occupy second position in league standings with just one point separating them from defending champions Bayern Munich, while they lead Group F in the UCL. Golden Boy winner Erling Haaland has stolen the show, netting 15 goals in 12 matches in all competitions.

In the latest episode of the SL Podcast’s ‘The Bundesliga Connection’, DW Sports Correspondent Kres Harrington suggests that Dortmund may not need Sancho as much as they did during his breakout campaign last season. Harrington states “Jadon Sancho being on the bench, I think that’s problematic because it was just last season that Sancho was heralded as the biggest prospect in the Bundesliga and he’s only collecting dust right now and proving himself to be expendable”. In the full podcast, Harrington also recaps other matches from the most recent weekend of Bundesliga action and provides a preview of this week’ UCL action.

Ernst Middendorp, who coached Kaizer Chiefs for two spells during his managerial career, guided Arminia Bielefeld up to the top flight of German football from the Bundesliga Third Division. During Bielefeld's 100th anniversary, they elected Middendorp their "Coach of the Century" for his contributions to the team.

Also on the show, Kres analyses Knowledge Musona's time in Germany at TSG Hoffenheim, where the winger struggled to perform in the shadow of Roberto Firmino who joined only six months after Musona.

'There Is Already Bad Blood Between Sancho & Dortmund'

Borussia Dortmund have made headlines over the past few months window due to Manchester United’s interest in star player Jadon Sancho. Several football publications have reported that Sancho has agreed personal terms, but that United are not willing to meet Dortmund’s £108 million asking fee for the highly-rated 20-year old. The deal has raised eyebrows as Sancho reportedly would like to make his name in the English Premier League, but Dortmund have held out, insisting he stay for another season.

In the latest episode of the SL Podcast’s ‘The Bundesliga Connection’, DW Sports Correspondent Kres Harrington breaks down Sancho’s deteriorating relationship with Dortmund, and whether or not the transfer saga will impact his performances this season. Harrington also discusses the latest Bundesliga matchday, how another Dortmund youngster is making a name for himself, and how Bayern Munich can defend their UEFA Champions League this season.

How Hoffenheim Took Advantage Of Bayern’s Super Cup Fatigue

Bayern Munich’s incredible run of winning 23 competitive matches in a row has come to an end, with the quadruple winners falling to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Hoffenheim. For the first time in 10 months, the German giants lost a football match but the result can be chalked up to fatigue, with the loss coming just three days after their UEFA Super Cup win, and without talisman striker Robert Lewandowski in the starting XI. Furthermore, they face Borussia Dortmund in the German Cup on Wednesday night, and will argue that are more focused on completing the quintuple to cap of an incredible season.
