: The St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre of 1572 and the Sovereignty of God (Psalm 116)
This episode with Rocky Stevenson Pastor of Benoni Bible Church explores the harrowing events of the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre of 1572, a pivotal moment in church history where thousands of French Huguenots were martyred for their Reformed faith. Moving backward from our study of the Geneva Bible and King James Bible, we examine the immense cost paid by French Protestants who held firmly to the doctrines of grace, justification by faith alone, and the absolute sovereignty of God.
When the church bell signaled the slaughter in Paris, worldly powers assumed they had permanently balanced the scales against the Reformation. However, Scripture provides a completely different lens for understanding the suffering and preservation of the church. Preaching from the Legacy Standard Bible, we anchor our hearts in Psalm 116:15 to see that the deaths of God's holy ones are precious in His sight, never occurring outside His sovereign notice. We also look to Proverbs 11:1, recognizing that while the world operates on a deceptive balance of power, Yahweh’s just weights will ultimately prevail. Theodore Beza famously noted that the church is an anvil that has worn out many hammers—a truth proven as the scattered remnant carried the Gospel across the globe.
We invite you to listen to this sober reflection on the resilience of the historic Christian faith. May it challenge you to stand firm on biblical truth, reject cultural compromise, and rest in our unmovable King.
