John Ortberg skryf: ‘In 1780 was daar ‘n Jesus-volgeling in Groot Brittanje, genaamd Robert Raikes, wat nie kon verdra dat die siklus van armoede en onkunde ‘n hele generasie van kinders vernietig het nie. Die alfabet van die Slawiese mense word Cirillies genoem. Dit is genoem na Sint Cyril, ‘n sendeling wat ontdek het dat die Slawiese mense geen geskrewe alfabet het nie. Dus het hy een vir hulle geskep sodat hulle oor Jesus in hul eie taal kon lees. ‘n Metodistiese sendeling, Frank Laubach, het sowat ‘n eeu gelede ‘n buitengewone ontmoeting met God gehad, wat hom op ‘n missie gestuur het om die wêreld uit onkunde op te hef. Hy het na meer as honderd lande gereis, wat die ontwikkeling van leesboeke in 313 tale tot gevolg gehad het. Hy het as ‘die apostel van die ongeletterdes,’ bekend geword.’
