Amongst other things, we chat about how Nando’s is always so visible and topical, with a much smaller budget that their major competitors - how to maximise your marketing spend to get a higher share of voice. Nando’s is certainly part of South African culture with its challenger brand status, quirky nature and ongoing commentary. But having watched the brand for years, we get the sense that it has changed and is now questioning serious societal matters in a more purposeful manner e.g. ‘You People’, ‘Not Sharing is Caring’,’ Economic Quarter’, ‘Mnzansipoli’ etc. and has become more of ‘the voice of the people’ as opposed to just being funny for the sake of it.

We discuss the very important aspect of culture and internal marketing, how marketers need to spend more time listening and not just taking, and Doug also shares his overall approach to marketing and some very valuable pieces of marketing advice that can be applied in 2021 and beyond.
