The Art of Letting Go: Finding Freedom Through Seasons of Loss and Faith

Loading player...
In this episode of Christian Perspective on the News on Radio Cape Pulpit 729 AM, the speaker reflects on Ecclesiastes chapter 3, verses 1–8, exploring the biblical truth that there is a time and season for everything—including weeping, mourning, uprooting, and letting go. Drawing on personal experience of emigrating from South Africa to the Netherlands three years ago, the speaker shares the ongoing grief of leaving behind family, friends, familiarity, and cultural treasures like braais and Springbok rugby. Yet, in that loss, God has opened doors to new friendships, new relationships, and even preaching in Dutch—something unimaginable just a few years prior. Inspired by Richard Rohr's book The Art of Letting Go, the message highlights a "spirituality of subtraction," where spiritual maturity often means releasing—not accumulating. Four key areas of letting go are identified: letting go of control, letting go of an old season, letting go of resentment through forgiveness, and letting go of the false self we thought we had to be. The episode closes with an invitation to trust God in the falling, what Rohr calls "falling upwards into the arms of God," and to discover His love in the release.
