: Conquering Hidden Sin and Spiritual Defeat in Joshua 7 | Corporate Holiness and Salvation
In this expository message with Rocky Stevenson Pastor of Benoni Bible Church from our ongoing series through the Old Testament book of Joshua, we examine the sobering lesson of Chapter 7, transitioning from the stunning victory at Jericho to the bitter, humiliating defeat at Ai. When an initial scouting party approaches tiny Ai with hubris and self-reliance, Israel suffers unexpected casualties and the hearts of the people melt in despair. As Joshua falls face down in anguish, Yahweh reveals the true root of the crisis: the infection of hidden sin in the camp. Through the account of Achan’s greed, theft of the devoted things (cherem), and subsequent exposure in the valley of Achor, we confront the vital biblical truth that sin is never truly private and always impacts corporate holiness.
Drawing from key Scripture passages including Joshua | 7:1–26 and Joshua | 7:10–12, this study points us directly to the holiness of God and the ultimate solution found in Jesus Christ. Just as Achan's hidden wedge brought judgment, Christ bore our secret sins, exposing them on the cross so we could be cleansed and restored to fellowship with God. Whether you are seeking deeper biblical theology, exploring sermon preparation resources, or dealing with personal conviction, this message challenges us to bring hidden compromises into the light. Take a moment to listen, reflect on the seriousness of unconfessed sin, and find absolute cleansing and forgiveness in our Savior.
