: The Edict of Nantes and the Sufficiency of Scripture | Romans 12 | History
In 1598, King Henry IV issued the Edict of Nantes, attempting to end decades of brutal civil war in France. For the Huguenots, this granted a fragile, temporary truce—a chance to worship without the immediate terror of state-sanctioned violence. But as we explore this pivotal moment in church history, we must ask: what is the true cost of peace, and where does our ultimate security reside?
In this episode of Memorable Monday with Rocky Stevenson Pastor of Benoni Bible Church, we examine the French Wars of Religion and the limits of political toleration. Using Romans | 12:18 as a guide, we distinguish between being a peacemaker and compromising the truth of the Gospel. We discuss how the Huguenots navigated the pressure to abandon their confession, even when they held the king’s permission to gather. Drawing on the faith described in Hebrews | 11:13, we are reminded that our true identity is found in being strangers and exiles on the earth, anchored not in royal decrees or cultural approval, but in the immutable promises of God.
As we look back at the rise and eventual fall of the Edict of Nantes, we are confronted with the temptation to trade biblical conviction for cultural peace. Join us as we reflect on the sufficiency of the Gospel and the importance of building our lives on a foundation that the world can neither give nor take away.
