Romans 13: The Gunpowder Plot of 1605, Conscience, State Power, and Political Violence
In 1605, thirteen radicalized conspirators placed 36 barrels of gunpowder under the House of Lords in a failed attempt to obliterate the English government during the State Opening of Parliament. Known to history as the Gunpowder Plot, this dramatic event raises fundamental questions that every Christian must answer: How should believers relate to a host state? When does a legitimate concern for freedom of conscience morph into sinful political rebellion? And how does the light of Sacred Scripture evaluate state authority, religious dissent, and political violence?
In this episode of Memorable Monday with Rocky Sytevenson Pastor of Benoni Bible Church, we trace the historical tensions of early 17th-century England—from the death of Queen Elizabeth I to the broken expectations surrounding King James I. We examine why state powers were deeply terrified of religious dissenters, how foreign allegiances threatened civil order, and how Guy Fawkes and Robert Catesby justified their radical actions.
Most importantly, we bring the events of November 5th under the searchlight of Biblical theology. Looking through the lens of God's Word, we explore how Scripture grounds human authority and commands civil obedience while maintaining absolute allegiance to King Jesus.
• Key Scriptures: Romans | 13:1–7, 1 Peter | 2:13–17, 1 Timothy | 2:1–2, Acts | 5:29
Whether you are studying church history, political theology, or the biblical boundaries of civil governance, we invite you to listen, reflect, and consider how God's sovereign providence rules over the kingdoms of men.
