Kob And Garrick Madness - KZN REPORT (2 JULY '26)

The school holidays have brought plenty of anglers to the water, and winter conditions continue to deliver some excellent fishing action across KZN.
Along the beaches and rocky points, kob, garrick, bream and shad have all featured in catches, with the odd shark adding some excitement. With baitfish still holding along the coastline and anticipation building around the sardine run, anglers have been rewarded with steady action and a wide variety of species.
Offshore fishing remains a highlight, with amberjack and snoek leading the charge. Live bait has been the standout option, while trolling lures are producing consistently for anglers covering ground. Tuna have also been providing thrilling action, and bottom fishing has been particularly productive, with kob and geelbek coming from the reefs on chokka and sardine baits.
In the Midlands, trout anglers have enjoyed steady catches despite milder-than-usual winter conditions. Brightly coloured flies have been producing fish, while slower presentations with natural patterns are accounting for some of the better specimens. Bass fishing remains relatively quiet, although fish are beginning to show signs of increased activity at Albert Falls and Midmar.
With favourable weather windows on the cards and the holidays in full swing, it's a great time to get outdoors and enjoy everything KZN's fisheries have to offer.
