Anglers across KwaZulu-Natal are reporting encouraging catches following a spell of improved sea conditions, with activity picking up from Durban Bay to the South Coast and offshore reefs.
Rock and surf anglers have landed a variety of species, including kob, garrick, stumpnose, pompano and blacktail, while Durban Bay continues to produce good grunter catches. Sharks and rays have also featured in reports, adding to the variety along the coastline.
Offshore fishing has improved significantly, particularly around Durban, where anglers have reported musselcracker, geelbek, half-kob and daggas. Yellowtail, tuna and couta have also been caught, while the first sightings of wahoo further north have raised expectations ahead of the upcoming gamefish season.
Freshwater anglers have also enjoyed some success, with trout reported in the Bushman's River and local stillwaters. Bass fishing is improving at Midmar Dam, while carp and tilapia are producing at Albert Falls. Jozini Dam has also delivered promising tigerfish catches.
