There are plenty of reasons to get your fishing gear ready this weekend, with the KZN coast producing some excellent catches. The edible fishing along the East Coast has really switched on, with, stumpnose, grunter, garrick, kob and bronze bream all featuring. Black musselcracker have also made a few surprise appearances, while inside Durban Bay the grunter fishing remains excellent, with quality kob and a few juvenile kingfish also coming out. There have also been some surprise catches, including grey sharks, diamond rays and honeycomb rays. With sandshark season just kicking, things are only going to get more interesting.
Meanwhile out deep, after weeks of difficult weather, offshore anglers finally have something to smile about, with quality musselcracker, half kob, geelbek, yellowtail and bigger soldiers being landed. Water temperatures are sitting around 22°C, while garrick are active around the Blue Lagoon and Virginia areas and the first wahoo are starting to show offshore. Reports of mackerel moving north could also be a very positive sign for the summer gamefish season. On the freshwater front, trout streams are clearing and good fish are being reported from the Mooi and Bushmans Rivers, while yellowfish anglers are back in action on the Umgeni, while bass, carp and barbel are being caught at Midmar and Albert Falls.
All in all, this weekend is lined up to have rods bending throughout the coastline.
