: Biblical Church Membership Explained
What does the Bible actually teach about church membership—and why does it matter for everyday Christian living?
In this episode of Theology Tuesday with Rocky Stevenson pastor of Benoni Bible Church, we examine the biblical logic of church membership through Hebrews | 10:24–25. Scripture presents the church not as a casual association, but as a committed, covenantal body where believers are mutually responsible for one another’s spiritual growth. The command to “stimulate one another to love and good works” (Hebrews | 10:24) and to not forsake “our own assembling together” (Hebrews | 10:25) assumes a defined, visible community of believers.
We also explore the crucial distinction between the universal church—known perfectly by God (2 Timothy | 2:19)—and the local church, which is a visible gathering that must strive toward regenerate membership. From Acts | 2 to the anticipated return of Christ (1 Thessalonians | 4:16–17), God’s design is clear: those who belong to Christ are called to belong to His body in a meaningful, accountable way.
This episode challenges both false assurance and casual commitment. Are you resting in Christ alone for salvation? And are you faithfully committed to a local body of believers?
Listen in and consider how the theology of the church should shape your daily life and discipleship.
