Reflecting on symbolic protest action by Cape Muslims during the Hijri year, 1439
--:--
Muslims worldwide marked the start of the new Hijri year, 1440 last night, with the South African Muslim community officially declaring Muharram 1, 1440, on September 11, 2018. The first month in the Islamic calendar is also known as the period in which Muslims celebrate the Hijrah of the Prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him) from Makkah to Madina.
During the previous Hijri year 1439, social activism appeared to be on the increase in the Western Cape with residents of Bo-Kaap embarking in symbolic protest action against gentrification and in protection of their Islamic heritage.
For more on this, VOC's Breakfast Beat host, Goolam Fakier, spoke to the chairperson of the Claremont Main Road Masjid and local activist, Imam Dr Rashid Omar.
