The Historical context and role of Women in the Masjid

While Muslim women enjoy many victories in their struggle for freedom to be acknowledged in the global Muslim community. Some women still face patriarchy that is bent on isolating the role of a female to the home.
In a recent incident a group of local women were prevented from entering Masjid Siraatul Jannah, a Johannesburg based mosque. This after the group of close to 30 females had planned to have iftaar and perform Taraweegh in the demarcated female section of the mosque precinct. The post and videos of the incident has since received mixed-reaction from the Muslim community of South Africa and abroad, forcing open an otherwise taboo topic.
