The Tarlton Agripark project in Mogale City has come under scrutiny after the Democratic Alliance (DA) raised concerns about the effectiveness of a reported R45 million investment that currently supports just 11 enterprises. The issue has reignited debate about whether government agricultural funding is reaching enough emerging farmers and delivering meaningful economic outcomes. Critics argue that while government continues to promote agricultural development and job creation, many aspiring farmers remain excluded from support programmes.
Central to the controversy is the case of Sakhile Jele, an emerging poultry farmer and entrepreneur who says he has waited more than a year for a decision on his funding application. According to the DA, Jele has faced changing application requirements and administrative delays, including requests for documentation that were allegedly not part of the original application process. The delays have reportedly prevented him from expanding his broiler business, increasing production and creating jobs.
