The Johannesburg High Court has ordered that oral evidence be heard in a high-profile legal dispute between ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula and ANC NEC member Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. The ruling comes after Mbalula failed to secure a final interdict against Dlamini-Zuma, who alleged that money was distributed to delegates during the ANC's 55th National Conference in Nasrec in December 2022 to influence leadership election outcomes.
The allegations stem from comments made by Dlamini-Zuma during an interview on the African Renaissance Podcast, where she claimed that Mbalula distributed money to delegates in order to secure his election as ANC Secretary-General and assist President Cyril Ramaphosa's re-election as party president. Mbalula has strongly denied the allegations, arguing that the statements are false, defamatory and damaging to his reputation. He approached the court seeking a retraction, apology and an order preventing Dlamini-Zuma from repeating the allegations.
