The Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) is warning parents to be more vigilant about their children's online activities, saying sexual predators are increasingly using social media and messaging platforms to groom young people. According to MISA, what often begins as seemingly innocent conversations with strangers can develop into online sexual abuse, exploitation and even trafficking.
The warning follows the high-profile court appearance of suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya, who is facing charges including alleged sexual grooming, human trafficking and rape. Sibiya has indicated that he intends to plead not guilty. During a MISAtv discussion, Danie van Loggerenberg, Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Child Protection, said the case highlights a much larger problem affecting children across South Africa.
