Fundiswa explains that cybercriminals have been exploiting security vulnerabilities in the SARS eFiling system to unlawfully access taxpayer profiles, change banking details, and divert tax refunds to their own accounts. The Office of the Tax Ombud’s investigation found systemic flaws in SARS's authentication and fraud detection processes, leading to significant hardship for taxpayers including delayed resolutions and wrongful debt collections.
