WesBank, one of South Africa's leading vehicle finance institutions, has come under scrutiny following allegations that it systematically overcharged black clients compared to white clients. According to a whistleblower and financial investigator Emerald van Zyl, black clients were charged interest rates as high as 18%, while white clients paid rates as low as 10%. These allegations suggest racial bias in how interest rates were determined, bypassing credit scores in favor of other "risk factors" that disproportionately affected black clients.
