Every year, the NFVF commissions research to provide comprehensive and accurate information on the Film and Television Industry to make policy recommendations. In the 2021/22 financial year, the NFVF conducted research on the State of Transformation in the South African Film and Television Industry to understand the extent of transformation within the Film and Television Industry in the country, with a focus on conditions 'behind the camera'.

The study focused on the multifaceted process of taking a film or television show from initial development through to production. The research drilled down into various elements, including marketing and distribution, financing, co-production, and servicing. The results offer an expanded and detailed understanding of the current state of racial, gender, age-based, disability-based, and provincially based social equity in the Film and Television Industry, thereby serving as a foundation to accurately track further changes over time.
