Every year at least half of the South African university graduates entering the Chartered Accountancy (CA) profession as trainee CAs in public-practice audit, tax and advisory firms are women. However, despite important gains, according to the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA)’s membership report, out of 50 324 accountant professionals, only 20 181 are women. This means that female representation is at 40.1%, while male representation is at 59.9%.

Moreover, in this male dominated industry women who remain in the field are less likely to make partner than their male counterparts.
