In 1977 Matthews Batswadi became the first black South African to be awarded springbok colours for athletics. After years in the shadows with some fearing that the multiple 10 000m champion had died an ignominious death, Afropolitans were happy to learn that he was still alive when Thulani Sibisi invited him to be part of the 2019 Old Mutual Soweto Marathon. We spoke to him.
