CELEBRATING 60 YEARS WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF LIMPOPO-JUDGE DUSTAN MLAMBO

As part of the 60years celebration of the existence of the University of Limpopo, we discuss the judicial system of South Africa with one of their alumni- Judge Dustan Mlambo. Judge Dustan Mlambo is the judge president of the Gauteng division of the high court of South Africa since November 2012. He has served in various portfolios, including judge in the labour court; judge in the Gauteng division (then called the Witwatersrand local division); judge of appeal at the supreme court of appeal; judge president of the labour court and labour appeal court; and chairperson of legal aid south Africa. He currently serves as chairperson of the court of military appeals; chairperson of the judiciary and administration it is steering, committee and a member of judicial accountability committee as well as editor in chief of the judiciary magazine. Judge president Dustan Mlambo- Judge Mlambo was involved in the adoption of the Lilongwe declaration. He was chairperson of the unodc expert group meeting that approved the draft un principles and guidelines on access to justice in criminal justice systems in 2011. He also the chaired the unodc expert group meeting that finalised the revision of the un standard minimum rules for the treatment of prisoners, now called the Nelson Mandela rules. He completed a law degree at the university of the north in 1983. At the end of an incredible interview he jokingly says that he was actually just warming up with all the facts join us for what the judge calls ‘the warm up”
