RPO reacts to misleading reports of borders being closed to livestock

Fellow agricultural correspondent Deon Blume spoke to Dr Pieter Prinsloo, vice-chairperson of the Red Meat Producer’s Organisation, about reports that South Africa has closed its borders to livestock imports from neighbouring countries. Prinsloo says this is not true. He says that as of 1 July, livestock entering South Africa will have to be tested for certain diseases and will only be allowed into the country if necessary permits are in place. He says this is to protect South Africa’s export status and to comply with international practices.
