A landmark black-tie gala concert marks the extraordinary journey from exclusivity to the ongoing journey of inclusivity through the arts
From a theatre shaped by the divisions of its past to a national cultural asset that proudly declares “A Place for All”, Artscape will bring its 55th anniversary celebrations to a spectacular close with the Artscape 55 Gala Concert on Sunday, 8 November at 17:00.
The grand black-tie and ball-gown occasion will be more than a celebration of artistic excellence. It will mark a remarkable journey, one that mirrors South Africa’s own transition from exclusion to democracy, diversity and inclusion.
Today, Artscape is proudly regarded as a people’s theatre of choice, presenting world-class productions to audiences from all communities almost daily. Artscape stands as a living cultural institution carrying the memory of where South Africa has come from while continuing to shape where its creative future is going.
The Artscape has been a vibrant home to the Cape Town and the Western Cape’s heritage, diversity and creativity for 55 remarkable years. It has showcased world-class productions while providing a vital platform for emerging artists and new voices. I have enjoyed many memorable evenings at Artscape, celebrating the best of what our diverse cultures bring to the arts. This theatre’s commitment to nurturing talent, supporting education and making the arts accessible has strengthened our cultural landscape and creative economy. I congratulate everyone who has helped make Artscape a cornerstone of our province’s cultural life. May the next 55 years inspire even greater creativity, inclusion and excellence.
