Jude catches up with Robin Auld for a chat about his new song, which shines a spotlight on the plight of our baboons, who are fellow Africans sharing our beautiful land. They also chat about the upcoming South Shore Festival, plus the latest news from Robin Auld and Shoreline.
South African singer-songwriter Robin Auld has embarked on a deeply personal musical journey, recording his own interpretations of South African songs that have influenced his writing and career over several decades.
Rather than focusing only on the familiar hits, Robin has chosen songs that may have remained largely undiscovered, but which nonetheless left a lasting impression on him as an artist.
His latest release is “Who Are the Africans,” originally written by South African folk legend Bill Knight in a trench on the Angolan border. Born from the perspective of an unwilling conscript, the song asks questions that remain relevant today.
For this release, Robin has dedicated the song to the baboons of the Cape Peninsula, particularly the Waterval and Seaforth troops, whose future remains a subject of growing concern.
Joining Robin are longtime collaborators Paul Tizzard on drums and Roger Bashew on bass, with Bronwyn Krige adding penny whistle and accordion.
“Who Are the Africans” will be released across all major platforms on 12 October, through Shoreline Songs.
