MINDSPACE soundbite – Why focusing on fairness is an economic imperative

On average, women in South Africa are expected to retire with only 71% as much wealth as men, and in their careers earn only R72 for every R100 earned by men for the same job. Imagine how the country could change if more women were fairly rewarded for their contributions.

When women are paid fairly for equal work, retirement outcomes improve. The country’s families led by women will have greater capacity to build generational wealth. And the economy benefits from broader participation and spending power.

The opportunity for meaningful change rests with employers. Lindiwe Sebesho, Managing Director of Remchannel and a leading voice on pay gap advocacy, suggests the five steps that employers can take now to close the gender pay gap faster.
