Green light for phosphate mine 'massive' mistake, warns marine watchdog

A storm erupted on social media on Saturday after the ministry of environment confirmed that Namibian Marine Phosphate had received an environmental clearance certificate for its controversial offshore Sandpiper Project near Walvis Bay. The planned extraction of phosphate-rich sediments from the seabed for processing into fertiliser has faced opposition for years because of the potential impact it could have on marine ecosystems and fisheries.
