Gauteng is stepping up the fight against organised crime. The Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has welcomed SAPS’ decision to establish two specialised task teams in the province. One unit will focus on political assassinations and the targeted killings of government officials, while the other will investigate kidnappings, extortion and crimes linked to infrastructure projects. The move follows alarming crime statistics presented by Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni. Phemelo speaks to the Chairperson of Gauteng’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety, Dr Bandile Masuku.
