MMC for Roads and Transport in the City of Johannesburg Kenny Kunene has called for Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero to resign over the suspension of Rea Vaya bus services in Soweto, describing the move as a costly “unilateral decision” that is draining the city’s finances. Kunene speaks to Phemelo about his recent utterances including concerns about Johannesburg’s transport budget and chronic underspending. Recent revelations by Gauteng Finance MEC Lebogang Maile highlighted that municipalities spent an average of just 21% of the Public Transport Network Grant in the first half of the 2025/26 financial year, with none exceeding 40%.
