From Grief to Groove: Joy Steffens Turns Heartbreak into House Music

This week’s episode is something truly special. I sat down with Joy Steffens, also known as Mammabear Joy, whose story captured South Africa’s hearts during lockdown.

After tragically losing her son Dylan to cancer at just 22 years old, Joy decided to honour his dream of becoming a DJ. At the age of 60, she went to DJ school, learned to mix house music, and now plays on stages across the country... even opening the main stage of one of South Africa’s biggest dance festivals.

Her journey is about more than music. It’s about love, resilience and keeping a dream alive through courage and rhythm.

Watch the full conversation here and feel inspired by a mother’s love that continues to move us all.
