"Can’t Pay Rent? What the Law Really Says About Eviction & Your Rights" Attorney Sphamanda Mchunu from NADEL explains

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has condemned ongoing unlawful evictions in Gauteng, calling them a violation of the Constitution and human dignity. Municipalities, private security companies, and other actors have carried out evictions without court orders, disregarding the Prevention of Illegal Eviction and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act (PIE).

Recent cases include the City of Ekurhuleni evicting residents from Pharoe Park flats over a R200m debt and Tshwane issuing notices to tenants owing R12m. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi also vowed to conduct evictions “even at 2am.”
