The City of Johannesburg has received criticism for imposing municipal bylaws regarding CCTV cameras. The bylaw states that CCTV cameras which show public places such as roads and parks must be approved and registered with the city. The cameras cannot be moved, updated or taken down without consent. In addition, footage of a crime cannot be shared on the internet or WhatsApp groups.
