Soweto residents up in arms over housing issues

MMC for Human Settlements in Johannesburg, Mlungisi Mabaso, was set to hold a
public engagement in Soweto to address housing issues but the meeting failed to
materialise after residents The department is also expected to give an update on
housing developments it has undertaken. The housing backlog in Johannesburg stands
at over 400,000. In January, a community-based group, National Social Ills, marched to
the office of the provincial department of human settlements. The group was promised
a formal meeting with the department. The protestors primarily complained of waiting
