Review your tax position regularly even if you are abroad – SA tax consultant

Emigration experts revealed recently that the coronavirus pandemic has done very little to slow down interest from South Africans to move abroad, but does moving abroad absolve you of your tax paying obligations? Expatriate Tax Compliance Specialist at Tax Consulting South Africa, Victoria Lancefield, tells the Business Hour on Monday (26 April) if you’re planning on moving abroad, you must know that you will still have to declare your income made abroad to the South African Revenue Service (Sars) on an annual or provisional basis. Lancefield says for younger South Africans making the move, it’s important to regularly review your tax position and consult a tax consultant, so that you are made aware of your options. Lancefield says Sars makes amendments to certain exemptions for expatriates quite regularly, so you need to make sure you’re keeping abreast of those changes, so that you don’t find yourself on the wrong side of the law.
