Youth Leadership Platform: BlackExcellence-ish

Bongani is joined by thought leader and content creator Nhlanhla Simphiwe Mthembu to discuss Black Excellence. She challenges the conventional definition of what 'excellence' is and explains why black excellence cannot only be celebrated when people thrive in 'reputable’ ways - academic performance, entrepreneurial advancements, owning a German car, owning an apartment in SA's fancy suburbs, or speaking with a Model-C accent. She explains that from experience and observation, the current definition of black excellence excludes a vast majority of black people who are excelling in different ways and may leave them feeling inadequate and like under performers. The two also chat about specific childhood events and the impact that they may have had in her adult life.

Youth Leadership Platform: Overcoming Prejudice (Part 2)

One of the hardest tasks facing every South African is to dismantle the prejudice, fear and ignorance that have been instilled in us by the way our country is structured. Too often we think that our personal behaviour is unaffected by the past and that others are the problem. But is it true? In this interview, Bongani Tau gets comfortably uncomfortable with journalist C.L Bell as they discuss her book, 'Lost Where We Belong', which began as a reporting assignment on 'democracy in the old Transkei' for Time magazine, and evolves into an extended essay on identity, belonging and what it takes to probe the conscious and unconscious shadows of an apartheid childhood.
