NC govt reaches agreement with Eskom

The power supply to five Northern Cape municipalities will not be cut for now after the provincial government reached agreement with Eskom. The power utility had threatened to cut electricity supply to the Ubuntu, Thembelihle, Magareng, Renosterberg and Dikgatlong municipalities over outstanding debt of around R113 million.

Spokesperson for Northern Cape Premier Sylvia Lucas, Bronwyn Thomas-Abrahams, says Eskom and a high level provincial government delegation, led by Lucas, came to an interim agreement.

She says the provincial government will now meet with the municipalities - which include the towns of Victoria West, Hopetown, Barkly West and Petrusville - to discuss a more affordable payment plan.

Thomas-Abrahams says this plan will then presented to Eskom for a final decision.
