DannythatGuy analyzes the week's big technology news in Zimbabwe, Africa and the rest of the world.
Highlights from the National Cybersecurity Conference and Expo in Harare, where ICT Minister Tatenda Mavetera told POTRAZ and her ministry to set up a national hotline for people who have been hacked. The episode also covers her remarks on the Child Online Protection Policy and a possible social media ban for children. It includes Econet's explanation of how WhatsApp accounts are taken over through one-time PIN scams and SIM swapping, and the support lines Econet has set up.
Zimbabwe's national AI platform, Project Pangolin, is due to be fully operational in the first quarter of 2027, according to the Ministry of ICT, Postal and Courier Services. The segment looks at what the platform is meant to do, including data sovereignty, a federated data model and national datasets for AI development, and what the National AI Strategy 2026 to 2030 says about it.
Zimbabwe will use VAR for the first time at the Chibuku Super Cup final on 28 November at Chahwanda Stadium in Kwekwe. ZIFA announced it on 27 October. Should this go successfully, Zimbabwe will become the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to implement this technology. We also discuss the role of broadcasters, and funding offered by Sakunda Holdings.
Beyond Zimbabwe, MTN Group CEO Ralph Mupita calls for AI models built in African languages, including Shona. Hackers stole US$6.3 billion from Binance in about 20 minutes on 29 October. Binance cites an FBI statement attributing the attack to North Korea, which denies involvement in crypto theft. Hackers also heated supermarket fridges and freezers in at least 8 European countries, and October saw the PHP2Shell flaws that affected websites worldwide.
