The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development, led by MEC Mbali Shinga, held a dual-purpose event in Umzumbe—a GBV awareness blitz and candlelight memorial for those lost to HIV/AIDS. The event, in a South Coast region heavily affected by the epidemic, honored the deceased and supported grieving families while highlighting the link between HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence.
Shinga urged communities to remember those lost, support affected families, protect children, and take medication consistently. The department reaffirmed its programs for HIV/AIDS-affected people and GBV victims, called for community mobilization against abuse, and stressed the need to end stigma and protect women and children.
