For many Grade 12 learners, the matric dance is more than an evening of dressing up, music and celebration. It represents a significant milestone after years of schooling and an opportunity to celebrate with classmates, teachers, friends and family before the final matric examinations.
But for families facing financial difficulties, the cost of participating in a matric dance can turn what should be a joyful occasion into a source of stress and anxiety. It is against this backdrop that youth-led organisation We Are Stewards is using community support and acts of service to help learners experience this important moment without their financial circumstances standing in the way.
We Are Stewards is focused on encouraging young people to take an active role in improving the communities around them. Its work is centred on service, compassion and giving, with the organisation encouraging individuals to identify needs within their communities and respond through practical action.
