Wandile Mathe is a South African writer whose work uses the power of
storytelling to inspire and empower young people. Known for his sharp teen
flash fiction, Mathe’s writing is deeply rooted in real-life African youth
experiences, offering authentic and relatable narratives that reflect the
challenges, hopes and resilience of young people on the continent.
He is the author of several notable works, including Hope Is Where the Heart Is,
The Owl Never Sleeps, and Against All Odds. In addition to fiction, Mathe also
explores memoir writing, using personal reflection as a tool to connect with
readers and encourage self-expression.
Beyond his writing, Mathe is actively involved in literary and community spaces.
He helps run the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Library Book Club, has
experience hosting community radio programmes, and has contributed to
theatre writing. He has also served as a judge for short story competitions,
further supporting the development of emerging writers.
Mathe is currently a fourth-year Social Work student, a field that closely aligns
with his commitment to giving back to communities. His work, both academic
and creative, is driven by a vision to inspire people not only locally, but on a
global scale.
Away from his professional pursuits, Mathe describes himself as energetic and
memorable. He prides himself on a carefully curated retro playlist, values the
connections he makes with people, and embraces his hyperactive nature as
part of his creative drive.
