The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has confirmed the arrest of three suspects—including the child’s mother—following a disturbing video that went viral on social media earlier this week.
The arrests were made on Tuesday in Newclare after a public tip-off helped JMPD K9 Unit officers locate the individuals involved. The video, which began circulating online early Tuesday, sparked widespread public outrage.
According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, officers were conducting a routine patrol when they received crucial information about the suspects’ whereabouts.
“Officers followed up on the tip and proceeded to the Newclare address provided. There, they found the mother shown in the video. She pointed out the two other individuals seen in the footage, including the person who filmed the incident,” Fihla said.
All three suspects were questioned and reportedly admitted to using a drug known as “madrex.” They also allegedly confessed to recording the footage.
They were immediately arrested and charged with child abuse and neglect. Their mobile phones were seized for forensic analysis and will be used as evidence in the upcoming court proceedings.
The suspects are currently being held at the Sophiatown Police Station and are expected to appear in court soon.
Meanwhile, the minor involved in the video has been rescued from the harmful environment and is now under the care of the SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
Investigations are ongoing.
