To mark 30 years of democracy, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, in partnership with the Apartheid Museum and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, presents Born Free: Generation of Hope — a compelling photographic exhibition by award-winning Dutch photographer Ilvy Njiokiktjien. Curated by renowned visual storytellers Neo Ntsoma and Azu Nwagbogu, the exhibition captures the hopes, struggles, and voices of South Africa’s “born free” generation — those born after 1994. It’s a striking reflection on identity, inequality, and the legacy of apartheid. The Exhibition is on now at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Houghton - until Sept 2025. Phemelo speaks to Head of Archives and Research at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Razia Saleh.
