World Health Day 2025: Championing Maternal and
Newborn Health for a Brighter Future
On 7 April 2025, the world observes World Health Day under
the theme “Healthy beginnings, hopeful futures,
” launching a
year-long campaign that prioritizes maternal and newborn
health. With nearly 300,000 women dying annually from
pregnancy-related causes, over 2 million newborn deaths, and
an additional 2 million stillbirths, this initiative highlights the
urgent need to end preventable maternal and infant mortality.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is calling on
governments, healthcare providers, and global communities to
accelerate efforts in delivering high-quality care before, during,
and after childbirth, while also addressing broader health
determinants such as mental health, family planning, and
noncommunicable diseases.
This year’s campaign advocates for a renewed global
commitment to universal health coverage and maternal care
equity. WHO emphasizes the importance of listening to women,
empowering families, and strengthening health systems to
support both survival and long-term well-being. Individuals and
organizations are encouraged to engage through advocacy,
participation in global events, donations, and by sharing
personal stories under hashtags like #HopefulFutures and
#HealthForAll. By investing in the health of mothers and babies,
we lay the groundwork for stronger families, thriving
communities, and a healthier future for all.
