As heavy rains have wreaked havoc in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, scenes of collapsed roads, sinkholes, flooded homes and washed-away infrastructure stream onto social media platforms.
Forecaster with WeatherSA, Wayne Venter, explained that it is normal to see a Cut-Off Low (COL) pressure system during this time of the year. A COL is a system that develops south of South Africa, and usually lasts up to 6 days. A COL moves slowly over a region leading to heavy rainfall in confined area's.
However, Venter points out that the amount of rainfall associated with this particular system has lead to record amount of rainfall seen over the past 24hr period in the KZN region. Venter also provides the services predicted forecast for the next two weeks.
