SA's first marine sciences matric class faces their final exam
--:--
Ashleigh Mingo has taken to heart the lines of a famous poem by English poet, John Masefield, who wrote, “I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky”.
The 17-year-old pupil from Wynberg Girls’ High in the Western Cape and 11 of her peers from the province will become the first group of matrics in Africa to write a Grade 12 exam in marine sciences.
What makes this slice of history even more remarkable is that the subject was not taught during normal class time but in the afternoons for two days a week.
