EPISODE 76: THE DARK SIDE OF MOTHERHOOD With Author Of The Push Ashley Audrain

--:--
DARK MOTHERHOOD

“Why do women become mothers? How does a women make that decision? How does it change them? How does it change their identity? And what about the women who regret it? What about the women who don’t look like my mum looked – a wonderful, warm, supportive, happy mother?”

The darker, uglier side of motherhood is one that no-one likes to talk about. It’s a side of parenting that gets overshadowed by ‘blessed’ hashtags and and curated feeds of loving, obsessed-with-each-other mom-and-tot-duos. People who have their shit together.

But what if – sometimes – you wonder if you deserve that honourable “Mom” title? What if you question whether you’re good enough for the children you brought into this world? What if there are times when you look at the people you’re raising and you don’t always like who they’ve become? What if you think about running away more times than you care to admit? What if – sometimes – you wonder what your life would be if you never became a mother at all?

In the latest episode of The Great Equalizer, author of The Push Ashley Audrain joins us for an uncomfortably honest discussion about dark motherhood. The Push is a tense psychological thriller about the making and breaking of a family and a woman whose experience of motherhood is nothing at all what she hoped for, and everything that she had feared.

While there are no spoilers in this interview, we find out from Ashley how similar she is to her lead character and whether The Push will be making it onto the big screen. And for those aching for a second novel to follow a phenomenal debut, we get get some inside scoop on what Ashley is working on next.
