We talked with Professor Kgothatso Shai as shed some light on their focus on decolonising the curriculum. Black Consciousness was and still is a big part of the institutional ‘culture’ in these spaces. You could even juxtapose this to recent calls for decolonisation of the curriculum during #FeesMustFall.

Professor Kgothatso Shai, the head of the department of cultural and political studies at the University of Limpopo talks to Skhumbuzo Mbatha and Mpho Mashita on the #ImmaculateBreakfast

During the month of September 2019, the University of Limpopo celebrates its 60th anniversary of academic excellence, research, partnership collaborations and community engagement from the 9th to 13th of September 2019.

The celebration culminated in the installation of the former Chairperson of the African Union Commission and current Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Clarice Dlamini-Zuma as the new and first female Chancellor of the University of Limpopo. The inauguration coincided with the annual 7th Onkgopotse Tiro Memorial Lecture to be delivered by the newly installed chancellor.

We had to first understand what it entails, and as a man passionate about his department was happy to tell us more about the treatment, use and standardization of language. He also shared some researches that they have conducted as a university and the results therefore.
