Responder in hospital following N3 protests

An emergency responder has been admitted to hospital after last night's violent protest action. Janine Wilson, who's with St Michael's Ambulance Service, says her colleague Ryan King was on his way to the scene of an accident last night but couldn't get there due to the demonstrations.

King, she says is believed to have stopped his vehicle and assisted police, who managed to quell the first wave of protests. But then they flared up again.

KZN's road death numbers highest

Since the beginning of December, Transport officials say 767 lives have been lost on our roads. KZN has recorded the highest number of deaths so far, at 162. Transport Minister Blade Nzimande says, "the single largest group of casualties, it's people between the ages of 25 and 34." Aside from drinking and driving, Transport Minister Blade Nzimande says the use of social media behind the wheel has become a major problem.
